Overview
- Flying Blue, which announced the change on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, will implement Light, Standard and Flex award tiers for Air France and KLM-operated bookings beginning Sept. 8, 2026.
- Light awards will keep current lowest-mile pricing but remove key inclusions such as checked baggage on many fares, advance seat selection, lounge access in Business Light and free changes or refunds.
- Standard and Flex restore those inclusions but require materially more miles, with published examples showing a U.S.–Europe business award moving from 60,000 miles (Light) to 75,000 miles (Standard) and 110,000 miles (Flex).
- Flying Blue confirmed that elite status benefits continue to apply on Light fares and that these changes affect only Air France and KLM-operated award bookings made with Flying Blue miles, leaving partner-operated award redemptions and existing bookings unchanged.
- For non‑elite members this functions as an effective devaluation that raises the incentive to obtain status or use partner programs to avoid Light restrictions, and it may push members to consider paid co‑brand cards or partner redemptions to preserve old inclusions.
