Flower Moon Rises Friday as a Micromoon, With Second Full Moon on May 31

Royal Observatory tips 6:23 p.m. BST for the clearest UK view.

Overview

  • The Flower Moon, which peaks at 1:23 p.m. ET Friday, will look full after sunset and into the evening.
  • This full moon is a micromoon near apogee at about 252,360 miles from Earth, so it will appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual.
  • In the UK, observers are advised to look low in the eastern sky around 6:23 p.m. BST, with cloud cover the main obstacle according to the Met Office.
  • A second full moon arrives May 31 at 4:45 a.m. ET (9:45 a.m. in the UK) and is also near apogee, making it a blue micromoon.
  • A Blue Moon is simply the second full moon in a calendar month, a result of the Moon’s 29.5‑day cycle, and it does not change the Moon’s color.
