Flower Moon Peaks Friday As May Brings Two Full Moons

Occurring near lunar apogee, it will look slightly smaller than a typical full moon.

Overview

  • The Flower Moon reaches its formal peak at 1:23 p.m. ET on Friday, May 1, though it will look full Friday night and on the nights around it.
  • Best viewing comes at sunset as the Moon rises low in the east and climbs higher by midnight, and it can be enjoyed with the naked eye from a dark, open horizon.
  • This full moon is a micromoon because it occurs near apogee, when the Moon sits farther from Earth and appears a touch smaller and dimmer than usual.
  • May ends with a second full moon on May 31, a calendar blue moon that is simply the month’s second full moon rather than a change in color.
  • The busy skywatching stretch also features the Eta Aquarid meteor shower peaking around May 5–6, which NASA notes can yield up to about 50 meteors per hour.
