Florida’s Two-Day Iguana Drop-Offs End After Cold Snap Stuns Invasive Lizards

An emergency order let residents surrender immobilized green iguanas under strict handling rules, with most destined for euthanasia or transfer to permitted dealers.

Overview

  • FWC Executive Order 26-03 temporarily waived permit requirements on Feb. 1–2 and opened five facilities to accept live, cold-stunned green iguanas from the public.
  • FWC reported roughly 600 iguanas turned in on Sunday with hundreds more delivered Monday as residents lined up at sites including Tequesta and Sunrise.
  • Professional trappers logged heavy hauls, with Redline Iguana Removal estimating about 2,000 collected by Sunday and Iguana Busters reporting 200 from a single Lake Worth golf course on Monday.
  • Collectors were required to use breathable cloth sacks placed inside locked, labeled containers and to wear protective gear, as iguanas can quickly revive, bite or scratch, and may carry salmonella.
  • The special collection window concludes Monday afternoon, after which normal possession rules return and surrendered iguanas are humanely euthanized or, in select cases, transferred to permitted buyers.
