Florida’s Month-Long Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Begins

Codified as a permanent policy in 2025, the holiday waives state sales tax on specified school items up to set per-item price caps to reduce family costs.

Overview

  • The monthlong sales tax holiday began Monday, July 20 and runs through Aug. 20, allowing Florida shoppers to buy qualifying items without paying state sales tax during that window.
  • Qualifying exemptions include clothing, footwear and bags priced $100 or less per item, school supplies $50 or less, learning aids $30 or less, and personal computers and related accessories $1,500 or less.
  • The Department of Revenue excludes commercial purchases, sales inside theme parks, entertainment complexes, public lodging establishments and airports, and items above the stated price limits as well as rentals and repairs.
  • Lawmakers made the holiday permanent in 2025 and moved the dates earlier in 2026 to align with school start dates, with legislative economists estimating roughly $217 million in savings under the same benchmarks in 2025.
  • Retailers including Best Buy are promoting deals tied to the holiday, consumer experts urge checking existing supplies before buying, and the broader tax package also schedules a hunting, fishing and camping equipment holiday beginning Sept. 1.
