Florida Man Accused of Trying to Steal Medevac Helicopter After I-75 Crash

Officials say the episode created a security breach at an active medical evacuation leaving the injured patients’ conditions unconfirmed.

Overview

  • Troopers say Riley Ferrer lost control of his pickup on I-75 shortly after midnight Friday, struck another vehicle and overturned into the woods while two people in the other car suffered serious injuries.
  • Hernando County crews shut the northbound lanes so a BayFlight medical helicopter could land to evacuate the injured and officers report Ferrer ran past first responders and tried to get into the aircraft but was stopped.
  • Authorities say Ferrer told troopers he had seen the “anti-Christ” before the crash and repeatedly refused to comply with officers at the scene and at the hospital.
  • After law enforcement escorted him to Tampa General Hospital–Brooksville for medical clearance, Ferrer was booked on three counts of resisting without violence and one count of burglary of an occupied conveyance with $3,000 bond on resisting charges and no bond on the burglary count.
  • Officials have not released updates on the two patients flown from the scene and the incident highlights questions about security and safety procedures when helicopters land on highways during emergency evacuations.
