Overview
- Florida’s Back-to-School Tax Holiday began Monday, July 20 and runs through Aug. 20, temporarily suspending state sales tax on qualifying purchases.
- The Department of Revenue allows exemptions only for items that meet set price caps: clothing $100 or less, school supplies $50 or less, learning aids $30 or less, and personal computers or related accessories $1,500 or less.
- The guidance lists many covered computer items such as laptops, tablets, printers, keyboards, routers and nonrecreational software but explicitly excludes cellular phones, video game consoles and devices not primarily designed to process data.
- Retailers prepared linked promotions to coincide with the month-long window and shoppers and consumer experts report meaningful out-of-pocket savings; lawmakers did not publish a new statewide savings estimate for 2026 and prior 2025 projections estimated roughly $217 million in consumer savings.
- The holiday was recently codified into state law to recur predictably and is part of a broader tax package that also includes a hunting, fishing and camping break starting Sept. 1 that carries separate state and local revenue estimates.
