Florida Alligator Kills 31-Year-Old Woman at Little Big Econ State Forest

Investigators have euthanized two large alligators for DNA testing after releasing bodycam footage to inform the ongoing probe.

Overview

  • The attack occurred June 28 when 31-year-old Brittany Clark was wading with her boyfriend and a friend in about 3 feet of water at the Econlockhatchee River in Little Big Econ State Forest.
  • Her boyfriend, Chance Allison, made a 911 call and tried to free her as a friend and later-responding deputies attempted rescue efforts.
  • Bodycam footage released by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office shows a deputy reaching the scene and preparing a tourniquet while medics transported Clark, who died en route to the hospital after severe arm injuries.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife trappers recovered two large alligators, about 12 and 13 feet long, which were euthanized and sent for forensic DNA testing to determine which animal was responsible.
  • Clark’s family has begun fundraising to return her remains to California and officials note that fatal alligator attacks are rare in Florida despite an estimated 1.3 million alligators and that factors such as low water and seasonal behavior can raise encounter risks.
