Florence Rail Link Between Campo di Marte and Rifredi Shuts for 24 Hours, Halving High-Speed Service

The shutdown enables installation of a temporary footbridge ahead of a summer bridge replacement that will require seven days of rail suspensions.

Overview

  • RFI has suspended rail traffic from 15:00 on January 24 to 15:00 on January 25 between Firenze Campo di Marte and Firenze Rifredi, cutting off Santa Maria Novella for high-speed trains.
  • Trenitalia and Italo have reduced service by 50% with one train per hour in each direction, and some services are rerouted via the Tyrrhenian line with up to one to two hours of extra travel time.
  • Bus shuttles connect the two Florence stations with limited capacity using three groups of six coaches plus six in reserve, shared by both operators, and the transfer is expected to take about 45 minutes.
  • Both companies updated sales systems and restricted ticket availability for affected trains, and Trenitalia deployed 40 staff in stations and on transfers to assist passengers.
  • Local authorities restricted road access in the work area with night closures from 20:00 to 05:00 through Monday morning, Intercity routes were adjusted including a Prato CentraleFirenze Rovezzano bus link, and roughly 100 days of worksite activity are planned for crane assembly.
