Florence Appeals Court Convicts Nine Sollicciano Prison Officers of Torture

The ruling overturns the earlier downgrade of charges, ordering provisional compensation to the victims.

Overview

  • The inspector, Elena Viligiardi, received a sentence of 5 years and 4 months, while eight officers were given terms ranging from 3 years and 4 months to 4 years and 4 months.
  • The court held the defendants responsible at various levels for torture, calunnia and false reporting in an abbreviated proceeding.
  • The convictions cover two assaults inside Sollicciano in 2018 and 2020 in which one detainee suffered a perforated eardrum and another sustained two broken ribs, with one victim forced to strip in isolation as humiliation.
  • Judges reversed a first-instance ruling that had reclassified torture as bodily injury and had dropped the falsehood and calunnia counts.
  • The panel ordered immediately executable provisionals: €40,000 in total to the two detainees, plus additional sums to the Justice Ministry, the association Altro Diritto and the national detainees’ ombudsman.
