Flood Watch Holds Across North Texas as Heavy Rains Continue

Soil saturation from Gulf moisture increases the chance of flash flooding in low-lying North Texas neighborhoods.

Overview

  • A Flood Watch remains in effect through 4 p.m. Sunday for parts of North Texas because recent and continuing rainfall has left grounds saturated and prone to rapid runoff.
  • Forecasters expect multiple west-to-east pulses of showers and storms today that could produce localized 36-hour totals ranging from a few inches up to about 6–8 inches depending on where storms train.
  • Overnight and Saturday rains already produced significant totals with DFW recording 1.04 inches and local reports of 3 to 5 inches in some neighborhoods that led to road closures.
  • Isolated severe storms are possible with damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, and very heavy rainfall rates most likely east of the I-35 corridor during the rounds of storms.
  • A strong high-pressure ridge is forecast to build next week, which should cut rain chances but drive daytime temperatures into the mid-to-upper 90s and push heat-index values to around or above 100 degrees.
