Overview
- A concentrated storm on Sunday dumped about 1.59 inches of rain in roughly 45 minutes over the Cottonwood Fire burn scar, sending fast, debris-laden flows that overtopped a diversion dam and rushed down Beaver Canyon.
- The Utah Department of Transportation closed State Route 153 indefinitely after initial surveys found several sections destroyed between mileposts 7.5 and 10.5 and about half the roadway near mile 14 washed into the river.
- Floodwaters breached Interstate 15 at milepost 109, forcing closures while heavy equipment cleared the roadway and emergency crews carried out rooftop rescues and evacuations in the Grove neighborhood and North Creek.
- About 200 homes were affected by the flooding and part of Beaver’s culinary water system was washed out, prompting bottled-or-boiled water orders and an American Red Cross shelter at the high school.
- Beaver County declared a state of emergency and state and federal teams are assessing damage as officials warn that more afternoon thunderstorms could produce further debris flows that would slow repairs and restrict access to Eagle Point Resort and nearby communities.
