Flash Floods and Landslides Kill 30 in Southern Ethiopia's Gamo Zone

Officials warn of further landslides during ongoing Belg rains.

Overview

  • Unseasonal downpours from the night of 9 March to early 11 March triggered slope failures and flash floods across several kebeles in Bonke, Gacho Baba and neighboring woredas.
  • Authorities confirmed fatalities that include a mother and two children in Yela Kebele of Bonke Woreda, two people in Balta town of Kamba Zuria, and six in Mazo Doysa of Gacho Baba.
  • Landslide debris and floodwaters have blocked transport routes, disrupting movement and complicating rescue and relief operations in affected highland areas.
  • The overflow of the Kulfo and Sego rivers damaged institutions and infrastructure in Arba Minch city and nearby districts, which local disaster officials described as devastating.
  • Regional disaster managers cautioned that persistent rains could trigger more landslides in multiple southern zones and warned of wider flooding across East Africa, where Kenya has also reported deaths.
