Flanders Fire Near Crosby Reaches 600 Acres, 0% Contained, Evacuations Underway

Red-flag weather drives fast spread across a region already juggling other fires.

Overview

  • The Minnesota Interagency Fire Center put the blaze at about 600 acres with zero containment by 5 p.m. Saturday.
  • Authorities ordered evacuations east of East Horseshoe Lake Road and south of County Road 11, and they closed County Road 11 between Crosslake and State Highway 6 while urging people to stay out of the area.
  • Local, county, and state crews are on scene with aircraft dropping retardant, and officials asked drivers not to stop on nearby roads so emergency vehicles can get through.
  • Fifteen counties were under a National Weather Service red-flag warning, which means dry air and strong winds can make new fires start easily and push existing fires to spread fast.
  • MPR News reported another large blaze near Two Harbors at 376 acres with no containment, and some outlets cited injuries in the Crow Wing County fire that officials had not confirmed as of Saturday evening.
