Five Young People Killed in Catalonia Apartment Fire

Police say the victims were found in a top-floor storage room, not residents of the building.

Overview

  • The blaze broke out Monday evening in a storage area on the attic level of a five-story building in Manlleu, around 80 kilometers north of Barcelona.
  • Firefighters evacuated the building, extinguished the flames, and then located five people inside the storage room who were unable to get out.
  • Five others suffered minor injuries; four were treated in hospital and discharged, and one did not require hospitalization.
  • Authorities have not determined the cause and have opened an investigation, with identification of the deceased still pending.
  • Manlleu declared three days of mourning with a public minute of silence, and Catalonia’s regional leader Salvador Illa offered condolences.
