Five Women to Umpire Summer Koshien for First Time

The move caps a staged plan to bring women into Koshien officiating.

Overview

  • The federation will assign women as umpires at this summer's 108th National High School Baseball Championship at Koshien, Japan's premier high school baseball stage.
  • Five will take the field under a decision by the tournament's operations committee in Osaka.
  • This is the first time women will officiate at a spring or summer Koshien tournament.
  • Women had already worked prefectural games and joined a May exchange match at Koshien last year.
  • The federation also ran a training workshop for female umpires at Hanshin Koshien Stadium last summer, and about 20 were registered nationwide then.
