Five Teenagers Killed in Wrong‑Way Head‑On Crash on M9

The police ombudsman has opened an independent inquiry that raises scrutiny of garda contact in serious collisions, potentially changing how wrong‑way motorway cases are examined.

Overview

  • A car driving the wrong way on the M9 between Junctions 3 and 4 collided head‑on with another vehicle at about 3am on Sunday, leaving five male teenagers dead.
  • Four people in the second vehicle were seriously or critically injured, including two women in their 30s, a woman in her 20s, and a boy who are being treated in Tallaght, St. Luke’s and Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin.
  • Forensic collision teams completed an on‑scene examination, the wrecked vehicles were removed and post‑mortem examinations on the teenagers are scheduled at Naas General Hospital.
  • Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, has been notified and its independent investigation is ongoing to establish whether any act or omission by gardaí contributed to the deaths or injuries.
  • Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly called the crash “horrific,” linked it to a pattern of wrong‑way incidents and urged motorists with dashcam footage or witnesses who were on the M9 between 2am and 3am to contact investigators.
