Five Related Children Killed in Two‑Vehicle Crash in Rural Ontario

Police are withholding further details during next‑of‑kin notifications while investigators continue their probe.

Overview

  • The crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton Township when a van carrying nine people and an SUV with one occupant collided.
  • Five children from the same family — aged 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 — were fatally injured, OPP Superintendent Dwight Thib confirmed.
  • Six other people remain hospitalized, including an infant, the children’s parents, two older adults believed to be grandparents, and the SUV driver who is in critical condition; at least three patients were airlifted to trauma centres.
  • Ontario Provincial Police have closed and examined the scene, are notifying next of kin, and say they may not release additional facts for days or weeks as the investigation continues.
  • The Perth County OPP will proceed with a pre-planned ‘Stop, Look, Live’ intersection safety blitz next week, a campaign officials say was scheduled before the crash and aims to reduce intersection collisions in the region.
