Five Charged in NCA Probe of Alleged Vietnamese Migrant‑Smuggling Network

The five now face charges following an NCA investigation into a suspected operation moving people from France.

Overview

  • All five are charged with conspiracy to assist illegal entry to the UK and transferring criminal property after arrests on February 17.
  • Those charged are Vinh Van Nguyen, 31, Quang Van Nguyen, 31, Lia-Chien Trong, 33, Sy Trai Ho, 27, and Van Huy Nguyen, 22.
  • The 22-year-old was arrested at an address in Rawmarsh, Rotherham, while four suspects were produced from prisons in Liverpool and Birmingham where they had been on remand over earlier money-laundering and ID document cases.
  • The NCA alleges the group moved Vietnamese migrants from France since summer 2024 using lorries and small boats and retained genuine passports to enforce debt bondage.
  • The men appeared at magistrates' courts in Liverpool, Birmingham and Sheffield, and the NCA says the case forms part of roughly 100 active people‑smuggling investigations.
