Five Birds Stolen From Parque Guinle Are Back Home in Rio

Cleared after quarantine, the five were released with veterinarians overseeing their reintroduction.

Overview

  • Four ducks and an African goose found in a downtown dumpster were rescued on Oct. 8 and taken to the city’s zoonosis center for care.
  • The group returned to the Laranjeiras park on Tuesday, arriving earlier than the planned 2 p.m. reintroduction and drawing an enthusiastic welcome from residents.
  • CCZ veterinarians dewormed the birds, ran blood and fecal tests, and will continue to monitor their readaptation in the park.
  • The goose Branquinha, who is blind, is being kept in a separate lake away from territorial swans to prevent aggression.
  • The environmental crimes unit is investigating the wider theft, and four geese—Gabriel, Maria Flor, Lili and Nina—remain missing.
