Five Arrested After Steel Pedestrian Bridge Vanishes Overnight in Chhattisgarh

Police say a 15-member group cut the decades-old span for scrap using gas cutters.

Overview

  • The over 40-year-old Hasdeo Left Canal footbridge in Korba was found missing on January 18 after residents used it the previous night.
  • Police formed a Special Investigation Team, identified 15 suspects, and arrested five locals: Lochan Kevat, Jaysingh Rajput, Moti Prajapati, Sumit Sahu and Keshavpuri Goswami.
  • Investigators say the structure was dismantled with gas cutters to be sold as scrap metal.
  • Officers seized a transport vehicle and recovered about seven tonnes of steel hidden in the canal while tracing where the remaining material went.
  • Ten suspects — including alleged kingpins Mukesh Sahu and Aslam Khan — remain at large as the investigation continues.
