Fishing Boat Sinks in Carlingford Lough, Search Continues for Second Person

The Belfast Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre led a multi-agency search that deployed helicopters, lifeboats and local coastguard teams.

Overview

  • Rescue teams responded after a Coast Guard distress report that a fishing vessel was in trouble near Greencastle Point and the boat subsequently sank.
  • A local boat crew recovered one person who was handed to paramedics at Greenore harbour and taken for medical care.
  • Irish Coast Guard assets including the Rescue 116 helicopter, an RNLI lifeboat from Kilkeel, Greenore coastguard boat and coastguard teams from Newcastle and Kilkeel were deployed.
  • A Royal Navy helicopter and Gardaí also assisted in the operation and the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Belfast coordinated the cross-jurisdictional effort.
  • The search for a second person remains ongoing and reporting is preliminary so authorities may provide further updates as the operation continues.
