First Trailer Drops for Kore-eda’s Live-Action Adaptation of Look Back

Filming is complete with the project in editing and GKIDS coordinating international distribution.

Overview

  • GKIDS published the first official trailer for the live-action Look Back, giving the first public footage from Hirokazu Kore-eda’s adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot.
  • Kore-eda is credited as writer, editor and director, and he has said that principal photography has wrapped and the film is currently in post-production editing.
  • The cast was announced with Natsuki Deguchi and Furi Nanase playing older and younger Fujino, and Aju Makita and Rokka Okada playing older and younger Kyomoto.
  • GKIDS will handle international release in territories including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland while K2 Pictures is set to manage the Japanese theatrical release; a September 11, 2026 Japan date has been reported but remains unconfirmed by the distributors.
  • Early coverage notes the trailer recreates several panels from Fujimoto’s original work almost shot-for-shot, which raises high expectations for faithfulness and emotional impact given the story’s praised 13-year friendship arc and Kore-eda’s auteur reputation.
