Overview
- Conservation groups released camera footage of a young Sumatran orangutan crossing a rope bridge above the Lagan–Pagindar road in Pakpak Bharat, North Sumatra.
- The bridge is one of five installed in 2024 by Tangguh Hutan Khatulistiwa with the Sumatra Orangutan Society and government partners to restore treetop routes after a road upgrade widened a canopy gap.
- Smaller arboreal species used the spans first, and observers say orangutans watched, tested the ropes, and built nests nearby before the first full crossing.
- The road connects remote villages to schools, healthcare, and government services but cuts prime habitat and isolates roughly 350 local orangutans into two forest blocks.
- SOS called the filmed crossing a conservation milestone and urged planners to adopt canopy bridges as standard, noting Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered with just over 13,587 individuals recorded.
