First Jaguar Confirmed in Guanajuato’s Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve

The find signals an active wildlife corridor in northeast Guanajuato.

Overview

  • Conanp confirmed the first recorded jaguar inside the reserve based on camera-trap images from a 75-camera project run from August 2024 to May 2025 with help from community monitors.
  • The research was led by biologist Juan Felipe Charre-Medellín and received funding from Toyota and Mexico’s science and technology agency.
  • With this record, the reserve now contains all six wild cat species found in Mexico, including jaguar, puma, bobcat, ocelot, margay, and jaguarundi.
  • The animal was photographed in conserved, continuous forest with little human disturbance, which points to an active corridor linking cat populations between central and eastern Mexico.
  • Conanp says apex predators keep herbivores in check, which helps protect forests and water, and notes the reserve spans about 236,883 hectares with hundreds of species at risk.
