First Escalators Reopen at Berlin Central Station After Deutsche Bahn’s Nationwide Safety Shutdown

Safety checks target a single escalator model linked to gearbox failures.

Overview

  • Deutsche Bahn took 130 escalators out of service across Germany as a precaution after gearbox problems were found in two units of the same build.
  • A Bahn spokesperson said a double‑digit number of escalators at Berlin Hauptbahnhof is back in operation, with exact figures dependent on ongoing inspections.
  • Before the checks, 42 of 54 escalators at Berlin Hauptbahnhof and 10 at Südkreuz were offline since Wednesday.
  • Affected locations also include Frankfurt, Cologne/Bonn Airport, Dresden, Essen, Hamburg and Düsseldorf.
  • DB says it is working closely with the manufacturer, has deployed extra teams and staff to assist passengers, and advises travelers to allow more time while elevators remain available for those with reduced mobility.
