Firefighter Seriously Injured in Rogers Park Apartment Blaze as Cause Remains Under Investigation

The incident drew more than 100 responders to a 1919 apartment building on North Shore Avenue.

  • Chicago Fire Department said the firefighter was taken to a local hospital in serious to critical condition after falling from the first floor into the basement, and CBS 2 reported the rescue occurred within one minute.
  • The fire began around 11:30 a.m. Monday at 1757 W. North Shore Ave. and was declared struck out at about 1:15 p.m., according to CFD media affairs.
  • No other injuries were reported in the Rogers Park fire, officials said.
  • Crews boarded up the building and North Shore Avenue remained closed to through traffic as of 5 p.m., with Department of Water Management workers on site for a reported leak.
  • Neighbors described heavy smoke from the rear and burn marks on the back facade, and a prior real estate listing noted the building had 13 beds and 7 bathrooms.
