Fire Service Hails ‘Incredibly Brave’ Neighbours After Leigh House Fire Rescue

A father and two teenage daughters escaped after a resident used a ladder to reach an upstairs window.

Overview

  • Crews were called shortly after 6am on 18 December to a semi-detached home on Laxey Crescent in Leigh as flames spread rapidly from the rear to the front.
  • Firefighters from Hindley, Atherton and Leigh, supported by an aerial ladder platform from Bolton Central and an enhanced rescue unit, worked for around eight hours using breathing apparatus and hose reels.
  • Greater Manchester Police reported no life-threatening injuries and said the cause is under investigation, with local reporting suggesting no third-party involvement is currently suspected.
  • The rescued occupants were understood to have been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and the property was left gutted by the blaze.
  • Neighbours led by Jody Shovelton launched an online fundraiser that quickly drew roughly £1,000–£2,000 and collected clothing and presents for the displaced family days before Christmas.
