Fire at Winthrop Yacht Club Destroys at Least a Dozen Boats

Investigators are probing the cause while crews continue marine firefighting, salvage, hazard mitigation

Overview

  • The blaze began in the pre-dawn hours around 3 a.m. Friday at the Cottage Park Yacht Club and spread rapidly through moored vessels.
  • Winthrop officials said gasoline floating on the water and combustible dock materials helped the fire jump from boat to boat and produced explosions.
  • Multiple marine and land units from Winthrop, Boston, Massport, Everett and Revere responded with water and foam, and two burning boats broke free and drifted during the night.
  • At least 12 boats were destroyed, no injuries were reported, and crews remain on scene for suppression, salvage and monitoring of fuel and debris hazards.
  • The yacht club sits by Boston Harbor near Logan Airport, raising short-term navigation and air-quality concerns, and authorities say the cause remains under active investigation.
