FINMA Approves Switzerland's First Retail Bitcoin ETF

The regulator cleared a fund-law vehicle that lets retail investors hold Bitcoin directly while tying approval to custody rules and leaving issuer and listing details undisclosed.

Overview

  • FINMA approved the retail Bitcoin ETF on Oct. 20, 2026 and classified it as an “other fund for alternative investments” that carries particular risks.
  • The regulator granted a targeted exemption from Swiss fund diversification rules because it judged Bitcoin has a long trading history and especially high trading volume compared with other cryptoassets.
  • FINMA linked the authorization to its January 12, 2026 custody guidance and required supervised institutions and distributors to follow operational safeguards and FinSA sales duties including clear risk warnings and suitability checks.
  • The agency did not name the issuer, ticker, fees, custodian or a listing date and said other managers have filed or announced similar ETF applications, so market impact will depend on forthcoming prospectuses and listings.
  • Unlike existing Swiss crypto ETPs, which are collateralised debt securities, a Swiss fund offers legal segregation of assets from the manager’s estate, giving investors different bankruptcy protections but not shielding them from Bitcoin’s price volatility.
