Finistère on Orange Flood Alert as South-East Braces for Multi-Day Rains

Saturated ground from last week’s storm is driving fast river rises in Brittany, complicating recovery efforts.

Overview

  • Météo-France and Vigicrues keep Finistère under orange vigilance for flooding on the Odet and its tributaries, with the alert set to remain in place into Saturday.
  • Thursday’s intense rainfall over waterlogged soils flooded parts of Plougonvelin, Crozon/Morgat and the MorlaixLanderneau area, leading to more than 230 firefighter interventions.
  • Emergency actions included evacuating at least four people, cutting power to about 200 customers for safety and managing road closures and regional rail delays near Landerneau.
  • Authorities advise avoiding travel in low-lying areas, staying clear of waterways and never driving through flooded roads, with limited spillover into Morbihan not ruled out.
  • A separate Mediterranean episode is starting from Friday through early next week with 100–200 mm of rain expected and locally 250–300 mm in the Cévennes, Aude, Pyrénées-Orientales and eastern Corsica, along with strong easterly winds and mountain snow.
