- Researchers followed 1,070 people with rheumatoid arthritis across 12,583 outpatient visits from 2021–2024 and reported the findings in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases on August 5, 2026.
- Higher PM2.5 levels were the main pollutant associated with worse outcomes, with each 6 µg/m3 rise linked to an 11% higher odds of a flare (OR 1.113) and higher PM2.5 associated with small increases in DAS28 disease activity scores.
- Analyses showed a temporal pattern: effects concentrated after more than two weeks and in lagged models where elevated pollution predicted greater flare risk about 12 to 20 days later.
