Final Fantasy XIV Free Trial Now Includes Shadowbringers

The move lowers the paywall to the MMO’s most praised story to draw in new players.

Overview

  • Square Enix expanded the free trial to add the 2019 Shadowbringers expansion after Tuesday’s Patch 7.5, making the change live right away.
  • Newcomers can now play Shadowbringers’ full story, level characters up to 80, join its raids such as the Nier alliance series, and unlock all races that only required Shadowbringers.
  • The trial still carries strict limits, including a 300,000 gil cap, no market board or retainers, no Free Company membership, limited chat, no Party Finder, and no PvP.
  • PC Gamer estimates the expanded trial now offers roughly 500 hours of free play, though the game’s high-end Ultimate raids remain off-limits without a subscription.
  • The update continues Square Enix’s pattern of adding older expansions to the trial, following Heavensward and Stormblood, alongside recent fan event news about the next expansion, Evercold.
