Fighting Persists in Southern Lebanon Despite USIran Understanding

Dispute over whether the deal covers Lebanon is preventing a clear ceasefire and keeping frontline clashes and strikes in place.

Overview

  • Hezbollah reported attacking an advancing Israeli force near Kfar Tebnit using rockets and drones, and the Israel Defense Forces said it intercepted rockets and carried out precision strikes against fighters it said posed immediate threats.
  • Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that Israeli strikes killed at least four people in Nabatieh governorate on June 16, while separate drone attacks hit vehicles in nearby villages.
  • Iran and mediators including Pakistan say the USIran memorandum covers Lebanon and calls for Israeli withdrawal, but Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have publicly rejected that interpretation.
  • UNIFIL told the UN it recorded a drop in projectile trajectories and only two IDF airstrikes during a monitored period on June 15, yet the reduction did not stop deadly incidents or frontline engagements the next day.
  • The fighting has steep human costs: Lebanon’s health ministry reports thousands killed and many more wounded since clashes resumed on March 2, large-scale displacement, strained hospitals, and an uncertain path from the diplomatic understanding to a durable halt in violence.
