FIFA Declines Action on West Bank Clubs, Fines Israel FA for Discrimination

The governing body says territorial questions fall outside its remit under public international law.

Overview

  • Following a review by its Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee, the FIFA Council decided to take no action on Israeli clubs linked to West Bank settlements, citing the territory’s unresolved legal status.
  • FIFA also declined to act on Palestinian requests to suspend Israel from global soccer competitions.
  • FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee fined the Israel Football Association CHF 150,000, issued a warning, ordered a prevention plan, and notified the IFA of its right to appeal.
  • One third of the fine must fund reforms, protocols, monitoring and education within 60 days, and anti-discrimination banners must be displayed at the next three A-level FIFA home matches.
  • The disciplinary findings cited persistent racist abuse by Beitar Jerusalem supporters and tolerance of politicized messaging, and Gianni Infantino reaffirmed that Iran’s World Cup group games in the United States will proceed as scheduled.
