FIFA Bans Themba Zwane for Three World Cup Matches

If upheld, the extended suspension for serious foul play will rule the veteran midfielder out of South Africa’s remaining group games plus the team’s opening knockout tie.

Overview

  • FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced on Wednesday that Zwane has been suspended for three matches under Article 14(1)(e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code for serious foul play.
  • The red card followed a clash with Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado after Zwane came on as a substitute in the 2-0 opener, with Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio sending him off and South Africa finishing the match with nine men.
  • Coach Hugo Broos publicly contested the severity of Zwane’s dismissal and the South African federation is reported to be considering an appeal to the FIFA Appeal Committee.
  • If the ban is upheld, Zwane will miss South Africa’s remaining Group A fixtures against the Czech Republic and South Korea and will be unavailable for the team’s first knockout match if they advance, forcing changes to selection and tactics.
  • Normally a straight red triggers a one-match ban, but FIFA can extend suspensions for serious foul play; Zwane is a 36-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder whose absence removes veteran attacking experience from Bafana Bafana.
