Overview
- FIFA issued an accreditation for Christophe Gleizes on 10 June and president Gianni Infantino publicly said he hopes Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will grant a presidential pardon so Gleizes can attend the World Cup.
- A rejection of the pourvoi en cassation on 25 May removed the last legal obstacle to a presidential grace, leaving clemency as the main route to his release.
- Reporters Without Borders and Gleizes’ supporters call the accreditation a symbolic gesture and plan to use the tournament’s global platform to keep international pressure on Algerian authorities.
- Gleizes has been detained since May 2024 and was sentenced in June 2025 to seven years for ‘apologie du terrorisme’; his parents recently visited him and say he is treated well but feels increasingly isolated.
- The campaign could deepen diplomatic scrutiny between France and Algeria and will test whether high-profile football figures or World Cup attention prompt a rapid clemency decision before the tournament ends on 19 July.
