Fiery Harris County Crash Kills Two After Driver Flees Traffic Stop

Investigators say excessive speed likely caused the deaths.

Overview

  • A Harris County deputy reported a red-light violation around 10 p.m. Saturday at Spring Cypress and Louetta in the Cypress area.
  • When the deputy switched on lights and siren, the driver accelerated westbound and turned off the vehicle’s headlights, and the patrol unit briefly lost sight.
  • After a short search, the deputy found a fire in the woods near Telge Road where the car had plunged down an embankment and was engulfed.
  • One person was ejected and another remained inside the vehicle, and both were pronounced dead at the scene as fire crews extinguished the blaze.
  • Vehicular-crimes investigators are working to identify the victims and notify families, and they say speed was a likely factor in what they called a preventable crash.
