Fierce Winds Lash Alberta as Storm Eases and Power Restorations Progress

Overview

  • Wind gusts between 80 and 121 km/h were recorded across Alberta, with Two Hills peaking at 121 km/h and more than two dozen communities topping 100 km/h.
  • Swan Hills School sustained significant roof damage, prompting a Monday closure and structural assessment as roughly 200 students shifted to online learning.
  • Fortis Alberta said outages fell from about 8,000 customers to roughly 2,000, and EPCOR reported around 8,400 without power at 1 p.m. in Edmonton.
  • BC Hydro reduced Southern Interior outages from about 1,900 to just under 350, citing trees and branches bringing down power lines and noting longer restorations in parts of Northern BC.
  • Southern Alberta saw up to 20 cm of snow in areas including Calgary, Banff, Strathmore, Waterton Lakes and Vulcan, with RCMP near Airdrie reporting low visibility and several crashes on the QEII.
