FIA Endorses 2027 Engine Rebalance Toward Combustion Power

A political deal will shift more power to combustion engines in 2027 to correct flaws seen with the 2026 hybrids.

Overview

  • The FIA, which met Friday with teams and engine makers, outlined a 2027 plan to add about 50 kW to the combustion engine, cut the battery-based energy recovery system (ERS) by about 50 kW, raise fuel flow, and tilt output toward roughly 60% combustion.
  • The shift targets problems seen this year such as energy clipping, when cars run out of electric boost on straights and lose speed, and driving that hinges on constant battery management.
  • Technical groups now must turn the political deal into precise rules, with the manufacturers’ committee drafting details before a World Motor Sport Council vote.
  • Team leaders reacted in different ways, with Mercedes open to simpler engines yet keen to keep some electrification, Red Bull saying it feels ready to adapt its in-house unit, and Ferrari urging restraint over rising costs.
  • FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is also advocating a possible V8 return around 2030 to 2031, though timing is unresolved and any shift could ripple through plans such as GM’s Cadillac engine program.
