FIA Approves Targeted Aerodynamic Changes for F1 2027

The tweaks are designed to cut downforce, reduce tyre loads, improve crash safety, and lessen battery-driven energy management on track.

Overview

  • The FIA package published for 2027 trims rear-wing depth by about 20mm, bans rotation brackets, allows a new rear-pylon brace, outlaws exhaust wings, tightens diffuser rules, reduces floor leading-edge devices from five to three, and shortens the front plank from 900mm to 600mm with its leading edge moved back roughly 300mm.
  • The plank and front-bib changes were motivated in part by safety concerns that long bibs could intrude into the halo area during certain lift-crash scenarios and by a desire to force more conservative ride-height choices.
  • The regulation changes aim to lower overall downforce to reduce forces through the tyres and to limit how downforce gains translate into battery strain that has driven energy-management tactics this season.
  • Power-unit rules will follow aerodynamic shifts, moving the energy split from 50/50 to 58/42 in favour of internal combustion for 2027 and then to 60/40 in 2028 to cut the need for harvest-and-deploy battery tricks.
  • Teams are already reworking development plans because the dimensional tweaks change aerodynamic windows and chassis packaging; Williams confirmed it is building a new chassis for next year and other manufacturers say carryover will be far less simple than expected.
