FIA, ACO and IMSA Set Unified Hypercar Rules for 2030

The framework seeks to protect manufacturers’ investments, lower costs, allow hydrogen Hypercars under an Equivalence of Technology, and finalize technical details with industry before year‑end 2026.

Overview

  • The FIA, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest and IMSA outlined a single top-class Hypercar platform on Friday that will apply to the World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship from 2030.
  • The rules require rear-wheel drive and a mandatory hybrid system routed to the rear axle while preserving freedom over engine architecture and increasing target power by about 20 kW with a minimum weight near 1,040 kg.
  • Manufacturers may take one of two paths: use a registered constructor’s supplied ‘spine’ and common parts or build a fully bespoke chassis and hybrid, with all components required to meet the same technical specifications.
  • Homologations will run for at least five years with no routine performance evolutions allowed; limited Evo changes are permitted only for safety, reliability, or to correct a demonstrated large performance deficit.
  • Hydrogen Hypercars are accommodated in the framework with a 1,200 kg minimum weight, specific tyres and an Equivalence of Technology scheme, and officials say detailed regulations will be refined in technical working groups with manufacturers through 2026.
