Fenedur to Shut Uruguay Plant and Shift Adhesive Production to Argentina by Oct. 31

The consolidation moves output to Akapol’s Zelaya facility to supply Argentina’s market plus more than 18 export destinations.

Overview

  • Fenedur will cease production in Canelones, Uruguay, on October 31, closing the plant and relocating output to its Argentine affiliate.
  • About 40 workers at the Canelones site will lose their jobs, according to Uruguay’s industrial union federation.
  • The CSI declared a state of alert and demanded immediate measures in response to the shutdown affecting the chemical sector workforce.
  • Production will be centralized at Akapol S.A., including its 18,000 m² Zelaya plant in Pilar, which employs more than 150 people and manufactures brands such as Voligoma, Poxipol and Poxilina.
  • Akapol previously suspended staff for two months in May due to weak domestic demand and stock buildup, while the Canelones facility opened in 2008 after a US$5 million investment and evolved into a regional export hub.
