Federal-Led Security Tightens Around Dallas Ahead of RNC Midterm Convention

Overview

  • Law enforcement crews have begun installing metal fencing and checkpoints around the American Airlines Center and Victory Park as part of a Secret Service-led multi-agency security operation.
  • Planned street closures and a secure perimeter will start Sept. 7 and remain through Sept. 11, with the DART Victory Park station closed and checkpoints at Payne Street and two spots on Victory Place.
  • The Secret Service has issued a prohibited-items list and tight bag limits, set a temporary no-fly zone, and requires ID or documentation for people who need to enter the cordoned area.
  • The City of Dallas estimates security costs at roughly $1.8 million to $2 million and the RNC has said it will help cover expenses so residents will not shoulder the bill.
  • Officials are coordinating permitted protest locations such as Pike Park and a planned city-hall rally while policing agencies stress peaceful expression and ongoing federal walkthroughs showed the event has not been designated a DHS National Security Special Event.
