Federal Court Revokes Gurmeet Singh’s U.S. Citizenship

Overview

  • The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York entered judgment on Aug. 26 revoking Singh’s naturalization after a denaturalization complaint the Justice Department filed in February.
  • The DOJ says Singh kidnapped and raped a sleeping passenger in May 2011 weeks before he applied for citizenship; he was convicted in New York in 2014 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
  • Brooklyn federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis ordered Singh to surrender his naturalization certificate and U.S. passport by Sept. 16 while he remains incarcerated at Shawangunk Correctional Facility.
  • Denaturalization is a civil process that strips naturalized citizens when they are found to have obtained citizenship by fraud or concealment and can make them subject to immigration enforcement after criminal sentences end.
