Overview
- The FDA on Tuesday reclassified the recall of GreenWise organic frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold at Publix to Class I, the agency’s highest-risk designation.
- The recall covers all lots of four GreenWise products in 10-ounce and 48-ounce bags sold in eight states and removed from retail shelves earlier this summer.
- Public-health traceback linked the product to a multistate E. coli O145:H28 outbreak that has produced 12 confirmed illnesses and four hospitalizations, according to CDC data through July 30.
- The FDA placed supplier Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile, under an import alert so future shipments can be held for additional screening.
- Freezing does not reliably kill E. coli, recalled packages carry best-by dates into 2028, and federal and state investigators continue to probe how the contamination occurred.
