Overview
- The FDA reclassified Utz’s ongoing recall of specific Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips as a Class I recall on July 1, covering roughly 650,000 to more than 680,000 bags nationwide.
- Utz first issued a voluntary recall in late April and May after a third-party seasoning supplier flagged dry milk powder from California Dairies as possibly contaminated with Salmonella.
- Company testing showed the seasoning batches used in the chips tested negative before use, but Utz pulled the products out of an abundance of caution after the supplier notice.
- Consumers are told not to eat the recalled chips and to discard or return them for a refund while retailers remove affected products and check best-by dates, UPCs and batch codes in the FDA notice.
- The dry milk supplier's recall has already led to other product recalls and could trigger supplier inspections and deeper supply-chain checks as health officials continue their investigation.
