- Federal investigators at the FDA and CDC have traced a Salmonella Javiana outbreak to fresh jalapeño peppers grown in Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed in the U.S. by Coast Citrus Distributors.
- Coast Citrus agreed to recall the remaining implicated peppers after the traceback and retailers and manufacturers began pulling downstream products that used those peppers.
- Taylor Fresh Foods issued a voluntary recall on Aug. 9 of roughly 20 prepared items shipped to stores in about 26 states and major chains have removed or changed suppliers for the jalapeños.
- Whole Foods published a voluntary recall on Aug. 12 of more than 40 prepared salsas, guacamoles and related items sold in 12 states with Best‑By dates from Aug. 7–16 and no illnesses have been linked specifically to those Whole Foods items.
- The outbreak has sickened about 345 people with 36 hospitalizations across 27 states, officials urge consumers to discard or return recalled products, clean surfaces to avoid cross‑contamination, and warn that additional downstream recalls are possible as the investigation continues.
