FDA Clears Apple Studio Display XDR for Diagnostic Radiology Use in the U.S.

The clearance lets trained clinicians use a DICOM mode on macOS to view scans in general radiology.

Overview

  • The FDA granted 510(k) clearance to Apple’s Medical Imaging Calibration Feature, and Apple says it is now available in the United States on Macs running macOS 26.4, with other regions pending approval.
  • The feature adds DICOM presets and a calibrator that let trained medical professionals view diagnostic images for general radiology, with mammography explicitly excluded.
  • Radiology apps cleared for macOS, including Visage 7, Falcon MD, MIM, and OsiriX MD, can pair with the Studio Display XDR’s DICOM mode.
  • Users can switch between standard and medical imaging modes in macOS System Settings, and Apple says the display does not need a firmware update.
  • Apple pitches the $2,899 VESA-mount model as a lower-cost, multi-use option compared with single-purpose medical monitors, though specialists note it is not meant to replace the highest-end displays.
