FBI Director Accuses Arizona Sheriff of Delays in Guthrie Case

The clash spotlights unresolved questions about how quickly the FBI was engaged.

Overview

  • FBI Director Kash Patel, in Tuesday's podcast interview with Sean Hannity, said the bureau was kept out of the case for four days even though the first 48 hours are most critical in a missing-person search.
  • Sheriff Chris Nanos countered in a statement that the FBI was notified right away and that an FBI task force member was on scene the night Nancy Guthrie was reported missing.
  • After joining the probe, the FBI worked with Google to recover cached doorbell-camera data and released images on Feb. 10 showing an armed, masked man at Guthrie’s home.
  • Patel also faulted the choice to send DNA to a private lab in Florida rather than the FBI lab in Quantico, while the sheriff said both labs have worked together from the start.
  • More than three months on, no suspect has been named as forensic testing continues at multiple labs and a reward topping $1 million remains on offer.
